Working on yourself is a decision that, once made, you will not regret. Learning more deeply about how to make your body work for you is what we are committed to for each patient here at Core 3 Physical Therapy. Most rehab patients come to physical therapy after a major health event, when they are dealing with chronic pain, or after an injury. At Core 3 Physical Therapy we want to help optimize your results once you have determined to improve your mobility and strength.
We have assembled our top five tips to ensure your time and work with us is beneficial for your body as you build up your strength and mobility.
1. Come prepared. Before your first appointment, take time to make some detailed notes to share with your physical therapist. Knowing when your pain onset happened and any other related details will assist in your rehab plan. Bring a list of your medications, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. Your therapist may want to see how you do at the outset to help define your plan and goals.
2. Ask questions. Communication is key for a successful rehabilitation of your body. Being comfortable enough to ask any questions of your physical therapy team will be vital as you work together over the weeks ahead. They will welcome your thoughts and the ensuing dialog can help uncover any issues you may be encountering. It’s essential for you to fully understand the why of a movement as much as the technique of the movement.
3. Do your homework. There are times when you will be given exercises to do at home. Your physical therapist may also have some equipment for you to purchase to use on your own. It’s critical to follow through on all parts of your plan to achieve maximum functioning and range of motion according to your overall objectives. However, this is not a time to go beyond your PT plan without your therapist’s knowledge and approval. Overdoing it can result in the occurrence of a setback.
4. Keep a log. Monitoring yourself through a log will help you more easily notice the small steps which lead to great strides of progress. A log will show you tangibly all the work you have put in, and you’ll see at a glance how you have improved. It is also a good place to jot down questions or notes to share with your physical therapist at subsequent visits.
5. Celebrate goals achieved. As you monitor your progress and make noticeable improvement, it is important to mark these achievements. Recognizing a milestone of progress made is essential to continuing to your end goals with your physical therapist. Each small success builds toward the accomplishment of your health plan as well as your overall well-being.
